Experimental theatre in Mainland China rose at the end of the seventies, which till now has a history of more than three decades. Despite the fact that the concept and the realm of “experimental theatre” need further discussion and clarification, its existence has no doubt become a very important module in Chinese contemporary art. Quantities of great works, that are both experimental and widely socially engaging, have been produced within the past thirty years by some critical and productive artists, a lot of who are still active nowadays. This exhibition intends to survey the development of experimental theatre as thoroughly as possible, while we are very aware it’s a mission impossible. Including forces inside and outside of institutions, schools, folk, and market, we attempt to examine the effects they have on the progress of experimental theatre, and the role experimental theatre plays in the spiritual life in contemporary China within the past thirty years, and to address attention to the interdisciplinary practices between experimental theatre and contemporary visual art, photography and videography, dance, and other fields.

Aspiring to provide the audience a chance to re-encounter history, we have selected hundreds of representative works by dozens of artists from the magnificent landscape of the past thirty years and presented them in the form of documents. Meanwhile, the exhibition would serve to some extent as an image and video archive of experimental theatre, an ideal all-around visual documentation for young researchers. For us, the real experimental theatre is the vibrant Chinese society itself in the past thirty years.

实验剧场在中国大陆兴起于70年代末，至今在中国已经走过了三十几年的道路。尽管“实验剧场”的概念和范畴都还有待在进一步的讨论中澄清，但它存在本身无疑已经成为中国当代文化中重要的板块。30几年来，产生出了一大批既富于实验精神，又拥有广泛的社会影响的优秀作品，以及一些富于深度和生产能力的创作者，他们不少人至今依然活跃在舞台上。本次展览试图对过往三十年来实验剧场的发展脉络进行一次尽可能完备的梳理——尽管我们深知这是一个不可能的任务。我们尝试用包容的视野看待体制内外、学院、民间、市场等各种力量在实验剧场发展中的作用，及其在三十年中国当代精神生活中的能量，并且关注实验剧场与当代视觉艺术、影像、舞蹈等领域的跨界实验。

我们从30年来波澜壮阔的全景中选择了几十位作者的近百件代表性作品，搜集其表演现场的影像资料，以文献展的方式进行展厅呈现。希望提供给观众一个和历史重新遭遇的机会。本次展览也将在某种程度上形成实验戏剧的影像资料库，提供青年研究者全面接触视觉资料的绝佳现场。对我们来说，真正的实验剧场就是三十年来生机勃勃的中国社会本身。
