    2020

Four-channel video & sound installation, 23 minutes & dimension variable

The outbreak of coronavirus in 2020 accelerated the ‘cloudisation’ of our lives, and we became highly dependent on the activities that do not consume much of our own energy: e-commerce, logistics services, fooddelivery services, and cloud classrooms have become the new norms. As a consequence, our instant gratifications were satisfied, yet our perception of time and space as well as our lifestyle were changed. The emotional closeness in our personal relationships has nothingto do with physical distance, as our lives are transforming from a physical and biological model to a virtual and electronic one and our surroundings are undergoing drastic changes. Subsequently, new social symptoms began to appear: we are gradually losing the ability to express verbally and physically in a result-oriented society. Individuals are afraid of making little progress, resulting in cultural diseases. Based on above phenomenon, I began to think about the main causes of the social problems.
In this project, I recruited six people from Chengdu through open call. They are of different ages, different professional backgrounds and with no performance experience. Througha six-day theater workshop, we discussed our “surroundings”, creating the performance work Never, Rarely, Sometimes, Always and the multi-channel video installation with the same name. I hope to stimulate the audience and make them keep questioning in challenging times and face the contradictions in reality with positivity, liberate themselves from the standards, eventually, find the answers in their inner selves.
